United States Postal notes were introduced in 1883 and were the direct descendants of the
Fractional currency that circulated between 1862 and 1876.
They were, in essence a money order for an amount up to $5.00 and could be obtained in any post office
for a fee of three cents.
Interestingly, most surviving Postal Notes are in the denomination of one or two cents.
These notes are known as souvenirs because they weren't actually used in commerce.
Notes that are in denominations greater than .05 cents are valued more because they were actually used in commerce.
